The flagpole for the square was at one time recognized as the tallest in the world, because it reaches a height of 165 m, and its weight is over 200 tons. The total area of the territory allocated for the construction of the square is about 60 hectares. The diameter of the base of the flagpole is 3 m, and the flag that flutters at the top is 30 m wide and 70 m long. Since 2011, active preparations have been made for the Eurovision 2012, a concert complex was built specifically for this purpose - Baku Crystal Hall. Its total capacity is 20 thousand people.
Tourists who were in Baku in the fall of 2010 could observe how the flag in the square was changed - due to the passage of a strong storm wind, which tore the original sample to shreds. In 2010, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan was even forced to evacuate residents of the multi-storey buildings closest to the square. The reason for this was the fear of the collapse of a huge concrete flagpole, which could immediately demolish nearby buildings. According to verified information, the authorities spent more than 30 million US dollars on the entire construction, but no one specifies the exact amount.
The security measures are also interesting. Thus, the flagpole was developed using innovative technologies, therefore, it is able to withstand wind blowing at speeds of up to 60 m/s, which is not surprising with such impressive dimensions. However, there is also a precaution: if the wind speed is above 20 m/s, then the flag is lowered. This was done to protect the safety of walking citizens. On average, there are no more than 50 such days per year, so the rest of the time the banner of Azerbaijan can be seen from all corners of the capital.

Within the walls of the museum you can see flags of various countries and even khanates that existed here earlier. All exhibits have been restored since the 17th-18th centuries, and each of them is of historical value from different eras.
