On February 14, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, using the truce, blow up railway tracks and infrastructure facilities in Debaltseve. The retreat begins, but the cleanup continues with the battles.
On February 17, most of Debaltseve came under the control of the LPR-DPR, more than 100 Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner.

The importance of the Debaltseve operation can hardly be overestimated. The VSN showed that they can defeat the Ukrainians not only in defense, but also in the offensive. There is a civil war rule drawn up by the Americans, whom Ukrainians love so much: "If the separatists have stood against the central government for more than 2 months, you need to negotiate with them." The strategic importance of Uglegorsk may not really be clear to a simple observer, I can explain it by the following, probably the only thing: the entire western front line of the "Debaltsevsky Cauldron" is distinguished by the absence of the dominant heights of the Donetsk Ridge, and the front line from Uglegorsk to Svetlodarsk is only 15 km, and given that the Horlivka units of the VSN are more directed to the western regions of Gorlovka (settlement Mayorsk) to contain the Ukrainian army from Artyomovsk, then the eight-thousandth grouping of the junta's units would be able to "break through" a corridor for itself to Svetlodarsk, controlled by Ukraine, if the forces the militias were not deployed to the eastern districts of Gorlovka, bordering the "cauldron".
Such a tactical maneuver could well be carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the amount of 8 thousand soldiers and almost 100 units. armored vehicles. Similar facts took place on August 13, 2014, when the Aidar territorial battalion and the 80th airmobile brigade attempted to throw in the direction of Novosvetlovka and Lutugino from a boiler formed on the territory of Luhansk airport. This time the VSN warned of such a course of events, having occupied Uglegorsk well in advance of the probable breakthrough.
As for the eastern line of contact of the sides in the "Debaltsevskiy cauldron", it is characterized by 2 dominant heights (307.9 and 332.2). These heights are the most important for fire control over the only route Debaltseve-Svetlodarsk-Artyomovsk, and it was the 307.9th height that became one of the hottest spots at the lower ring of the "Debaltsevo boiler".
Nearby is n. Sanzharovka, which was stormed quickly enough, but with the 307th height everything was more than serious. The fact is that the height was the point of fire control of the Bryanka-Debaltsevo directions, as well as N of the item. Almaznaya, and the Ukrainian military created a powerful fortified area here to defend the Debaltsevo "corridor". The garrisons of Polish PMCs were also located at this height.
Of the weapons located in the height area, the most prominent were the new Ukrainian T-64BM "Bulat" tanks, which, in addition to enhanced armor protection using elements of the "Knife" DZ and the new FCS, were placed in caponiers, which greatly impeded the direct fire effect of armor-piercing and PF shells of armored vehicles VSN. The first attacks on the hill ended in a draw: first, the VSN pushed back the junta's units to the southern slope of the hill, then with an artillery response of dill from Debaltsevo, the VSN had to retreat far to the northern base of the hill and to Sanzharovka.

The price was high: 4 tank crews killed, 2 infantry soldiers.
The enemy, consisting mainly of mercenaries of the Polish PMC, lost 3 Bulats, 4 armored combat vehicles and more than 50 people killed and wounded. Tank "Mongola" during the assault on the heights received 3 hits with cumulative ATGMs and RPGs, but still continued the battle, until complete destruction, the crew are real Heroes.

Everything in the "pocket"
Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard captured Debaltseve by July 28, 2014. This city, 74 kilometers from Donetsk, is one of the largest railway junctions in Ukraine. Control over it allowed Kiev to quickly transfer reinforcements and develop an offensive both towards the border with Russia and towards the capital of the DPR from the northeast. However, having pushed the front line in one relatively narrow section between Gorlovka and Alchevsk, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were unable to achieve success in neighboring areas. As a result, a clearly distinguishable "pocket" was formed on the tactical maps of both sides, sandwiched on three sides by territories controlled by the militia. It was obvious that this ledge would not last forever: it would either be cut off by parts of the DPR, or they would try to expand the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, since the beginning of September 2014 (immediately after the Ilovaisk defeat of the Ukrainian troops), a relative calm reigned on the fronts.
The status quo was disrupted in January 2015, with the beginning of intense fighting for Donetsk airport. DPR units managed to take control of both terminals and most adjacent territories. On January 22, Kiev officially admitted that it had completely lost control of the airport. On the same day, a sabotage group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired a mortar at the Donetskgormash public transport stop in the Leninsky district of Donetsk, killing 15 people. The rise in tension here provoked intense hostilities in other sectors as well. In particular, the artillery units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Debaltseve resumed shelling of the surrounding settlements. In order to eliminate the threat, the armed forces of the DPR and LPR in the 20th of January launched an offensive against the enemy bridgehead.
The grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Debaltseve, according to various sources, numbered from three to seven thousand people with armored vehicles, heavy weapons, artillery, including large caliber. In addition to several battalions of territorial defense, battalion tactical groups of the 25th airborne and 128th mountain infantry brigades, as well as the company tactical group of the 17th tank brigade, were based here. The LPR and DPR threw from six to ten thousand soldiers and several dozen armored vehicles to defeat the grouping. Howitzers of the Kalmius brigade provided fire support to the advancing units.
The "lid" closes
The offensive of the rebels on the Debaltseve ledge began on January 22, 2015 with a powerful artillery barrage. Hit settlements that formed the outer line of defense of the besieged city - Olkhovatka, Redkodub, Popasnaya, Sanzharovka, Troitskoye and Chernukhino. By February 5, the DPR forces occupied Uglegorsk west of Debaltsevo, and on February 9 they took control of the village of Logvinovo, through which the anti-terrorist operation forces were supplied. The Debaltseve group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was completely surrounded: the "pocket" finally turned into a cauldron. The DPR militias proceeded to methodically suppress the nodes of resistance with tanks and artillery, confidently thwarting any attempts of the enemy to counterattack.

Of course, the official Kiev tried to hide the fact of the encirclement of its troops. On February 11, Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak said that the units in Debaltseve are receiving weapons and ammunition, there is communication and interaction with the command. In the same way, half a year ago, his predecessor Valery Geletay lied, claiming that there was no Ilovaisk boiler. The situation in August - September 2014 was repeated in a mirror image: units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard, being surrounded, completely lost their combat capability, and their senior officers left their troops to fend for themselves. The story of the commander of the "Donbass" battalion Semyon Semenchenko, who fled from the front to Artyomovsk, pretending to be wounded, and wrote from the hospital "combat" reports that did not correspond to reality, is indicative of the story.
However, the surrounded units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were given a chance to leave safe and sound. As a result of the new Minsk agreements on February 11-12, it was decided that both sides should completely cease fire and withdraw heavy weapons from the contact line by midnight on February 15. In turn, the heads of the LPR and DPR announced their readiness to provide the Ukrainian troops with corridors to get out of the boiler if they leave weapons and equipment. However, some commanders decided to go for a breakthrough. Some of the encircled were able to get out through the fields and country roads north of Logvinovo, throwing up to 300 units of various equipment in the boiler.
And on February 17, DPR forces entered Debaltseve and occupied the central, northern and eastern parts of the city, including the district police department and the railway station. The next day, the press secretariat of the DPR Ministry of Defense announced that the city had been taken under full control. On the same day, President Petro Poroshenko announced the "organized withdrawal" from Debaltsevo of two and a half thousand soldiers, 15 tanks and 50 infantry fighting vehicles. According to him, the 40th battalion "Kryvbas" and the 127th mountain infantry brigade left the city, in particular. This information in the DPR was criticized to smithereens. According to the official representative of the republic, Denis Pushilin, the units and units mentioned by Poroshenko were almost completely destroyed.

Losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard in the Debaltsevo cauldron, according to various estimates, range from 250 to three thousand soldiers and officers. In the battles for the city, 100-150 militias were killed. It is difficult to say with certainty, since the sides in a war tend to exaggerate the enemy's losses and underestimate their own. But it is known that the LPR and DPR got rich trophies - several dozen tanks, more than thirty infantry fighting vehicles, as well as tons of ammunition of various calibers. This made it possible to partially compensate for the losses in the material part that the militia suffered during the month of fighting. More importantly, the LPR and DPR took control of a major transport hub, which made it possible to establish a direct rail link between Luhansk and Donetsk.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claims that the Debaltsevo offensive depleted the forces of the self-proclaimed republics, therefore, after the February battles, they no longer carried out large-scale offensives. However, the anti-terrorist operation forces also did not take advantage of the opportunity for counterattacks in adjacent directions, in particular in the Gorlovka area. Nevertheless, the winter of 2014-2015 definitely remained in the hands of the DPR and LPR. The militia has finally proved that it has turned into a full-fledged army, which is capable of successfully conducting offensive operations not only tactical but also strategic level.
