MOSCOW, December 12 – RIA Novosti. The national rating of universities in the Russian Federation, which shows their relevance in the Russian economy, was presented on Tuesday, December 12 by the “Social Navigator” project of the Rossiya Segodnya MIA.
In 2017, the study included 448 universities from 81 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The assessment of universities was carried out according to such criteria as the demand for trained specialists by employers, the commercialization of the intellectual product produced by the university, as well as the demand for a research product (methodology).
The ranking of demand for universities included state, departmental, municipal and private universities that provided training in basic and additional programs higher education. Among them are 127 engineering universities, 89 classical universities, 54 agricultural universities, 61 management universities, 69 humanitarian universities and 48 medical universities. The study did not include branches, higher religious educational institutions, cultural and military universities.
As the results of this study showed, in terms of the ratio of “the share of graduates who received a job assignment,” the country’s agricultural universities are leading - almost 68 percent of graduates are assigned to work. The least in demand by employers are graduates of universities in the field of management (economics, finance, jurisprudence, 28.6%).
In terms of the “share of funds in a university budget from scientific research,” as one would expect, the country’s engineering universities are in the lead (on average 15.6% of the university budget). More modest (almost one and a half times) figures for medical and agricultural universities are 9.1% and 8.2%, respectively. The lowest average values are for humanities universities (7.7).
If we consider the “index of citation of works of organization employees,” the gap between different types of universities is not so obvious: the maximum indicators are for classical universities (11.9%) and medical universities (11.7%), and the minimum for humanities (8.6 %).
Among the engineering universities (technical universities) that are most widely represented in this study, the leader is the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. The second place in the ranking is occupied by the St. Petersburg National research university information technologies, mechanics and optics. In third place is the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman.
The leader of the ranking among classical universities, as last year, was Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. In second place is Ural federal university named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin. National Research Tomsk State University closes the top three.
In the category “agricultural universities”, as last year, the Stavropol State University is in the lead. agricultural university and Kuban State Agrarian University.
Among universities with an economic, financial and legal profile, the leaders in demand were the Russian School of Economics, the Moscow Higher School of Social and Social Sciences economic sciences and National Research University Higher School of Economics.
The first places among humanitarian (pedagogical and philological) universities were taken by the Orthodox St. Tikhon's Humanitarian University, Moscow City Pedagogical University and Russian State Pedagogical University named after. A.I. Herzen.
In nomination " medical universities"Nizhny Novgorod State University is in the lead medical Academy, Russian National Research medical University named after N.I. Pirogov and the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov.
According to Natalya Tyurina, head of the Social Navigator project at MIA Rossiya Segodnya, this study is of genuine interest not only among employers, but also among Russian applicants. “The rating has proven itself well; for the second year in a row it has shown high readability and demand: many young people use it to choose their educational path,” she noted.
At the same time, as the expert emphasized, it is not entirely correct to compare the results of last year’s ranking with the results of this year. "The main reason is that the current rating reflects the result of the recent restructuring and optimization of the network of senior educational institutions Russia," she explained. Thus, according to Rosobrnadzor, since 2014 the network has shrunk by half, which means that the rating base itself has changed.
The change in the network led to the fact that a number of universities that occupied decent positions in 2016 left the “tops” in 2017. Thus, according to Natalya Tyurina, the rating demonstrates measurements of the changed network for the first time.
This opinion is shared by the scientific director of the Volga branch of the Federal Institute for Educational Development, the scientific director of this study, Efim Kogan. Commenting on the results, he noted that the purpose of the rating is not so much to show “a place in the ranks,” but to declare commitment to the criteria for assessing the conditions and results of the organization’s activities. “The creation of a ranking of universities 2017 based on the criteria of the previous year takes into account changes that have occurred in the list of universities in the country for a variety of reasons - reorganization, suspension or deprivation of a license, etc.,” he emphasized.
At the same time, experts pay attention to the stability of leadership groups. In their opinion, this suggests that Russian system Higher education is generally stable in its characteristics.
The international information group "Interfax" published the results of the VIII annual National University Ranking based on the results of 2016/2017 school year(NRU-2017). In June 2017, the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) presented a ranking of the best higher education institutions in Europe. From Russian universities Only one got into it - Moscow State University. In total, 400 organizations were included in this ranking, or about 40% of the universities included in the global list (there are 980 educational institutions in total). In April, Times Higher Education published its ranking of young universities. There was also only one university from Russia in the top 100 - the Higher School of Economics. In submitted by Sadovnichy HSE rating was not included.
Higher education has always been considered an element of prestige, although not all graduates, being on the threshold of their alma mater, fully realize the importance of the step they have taken. Why, many people, until the moment they receive a certificate, cannot decide on a university, or, accordingly, their life’s work, and when the time comes to make a decision, they either do it hastily or are based on not the most significant factors.
Of course, the more prestigious the institution, the greater the desire to become a part of it. The status of the university in the future may play a dominant role in the distribution of vacant positions in a reputable company. Most likely, this is what you need to do - choose an institution in accordance with its popularity and quality of education, and the ranking of the best universities in Russia 2016 will help you find out which institute is better.
Universities “are not for everyone” and always will be. The competition also existed in Soviet times, only instead Unified State Exam results The average number of points based on the results of the entrance exams was taken into account. As a rule, there were 4 of them, respectively, in order to get into a competition at a reputable institute, you had to score “20”, passing all exams with “5”. Today, competition is viewed in terms of Unified State Examination points– the higher the access limit, the more difficult it is to get into the establishment. According to the results of the last “university” year, economic and medical institutes– 83.6 and 80.1 points, respectively. In third place are techies with 70.2 points.
Popular universities cooperate with related enterprises, so graduates have fewer problems finding employment. The same doctors and technicians who are determined to acquire as many skills as possible in their profession during their studies are showing high activity in this issue. Many graduates do not even have to think about future work - these include the so-called “target students” sent to study by the municipality or company. This practice is especially widely used in the field medical education, where approximately 29% of students were at one time “seconded” to healthcare enterprises. In second place by the number of targets” are technical universities(9%), economists are in third (2%).
What the rating shows
The most revealing ranking of universities, compiled by the Expert RA agency with the support of O. Deripaska’s Volnoe Delo Foundation, also turned out to be the most reliable. This is the fifth rating that has successfully passed the IREG-Observatory audit. International experts confirmed that the ranking compilers chose the most effective methodology for ranking participants, and the result complies with the standards top class.
The survey was able to find out what most influences the choice of university. The first three positions were distributed as follows:
- 32% of applicants responded that they chose the rating as the determining source of information.
- 29% relied on the opinions of friends and loved ones.
- 11% obeyed their parents.

- Degree of international integration - how many foreign students study at the institution;
- Resource provision – how much is spent per year on each student;
- Popularity among applicants - the number of Olympiad winners accepted out of competition, the cost of training in the 1st year, the passing score of the Unified State Examination;
- To what extent are university graduates in demand by employers?
- Research activity.
